When A Man Likes… A Man

“The man's got style, flair, integrity, presence and intelligence," a colleague told me while pointing at the direction of our supervisor at an extremely chic office in a high-rise building in Makati . So what's with "man crush" --- one of the most recent terms in the urban lexicon?

After the term "metrosexual" hit the town and left a mark in our vocabulary, mancrush seems to be of a trend lately. Having realized that I have something in common with the rest of the pack experiencing it, I feel the need to analyze and impart deeper understanding to men who have either experienced a bit of their own man crush.

Man crush is a very strong feeling that a straight man has towards another man but not on the sexual, having the ability to bond with each other and show their feeling without worrying what other people might think about it. Many straight men have man crushes on Johnny Depp and so with Ben Affleck. Sports fanatics on the other hand regard David Beckham and Michael Jordan with very high esteem.

Men are more likely to have man crushes on men in power, sports and men whose abilities they appreciate, A-type personalities or even on their friends.

But when asked if they would admit to having a man crush, most men said they've never had one and will never have one.

I guess it's the negative connotation of the term. But why is it that when a woman says she has a girl crush, it sounds cool while if a guy admits to it, he's ruining his chances?

Men respect other men, admire them and perhaps even envy them. But some would think a man crush would be taking it too far --- it's an uncomfortable word some men would think.
Why can't men admit to it? If a man is secure with his masculinity and sexuality, using the term should not hassle him. It's like straight men getting their legs waxed and it's alright. It is but normal for a straight guy to have a crush with someone from the same sex.
